The Bluestown Story

Bluestown was formed in Rockport, Texas. The original lineup formed in 2018 and had success playing venues such as SeaFair, Dockside Trading Company, and other local sites. The current cast of characters was assembled in Summer of 2024. As the founding members, Chris and Tony were eager to reform the band to play for their dedicated fans once again. Tony talked Matt Johnston into coming over to jam with him and Chirs. They quickly hit it off and began crafting their sound. Shortly after, Matt Hesley showed up one day with harmonica in hand and whaled his way into position to complete the bluesy ensemble of musical instruments. All they needed was a singer. Richard Stack, known for his shower serenades, was eager to fill the spot and worked with the band to bring them from an instrumental quartet to a full-blown South Texas blues band. The only thing missing was a soprano singer to fill harmonies and expand the band’s repertoire. In walks Scarlett Embrey. With an angelic voice and a wealth of musicality, she finished off the reformation. And the rest is history. Let the gigs begin.

On occasion, the band is honored to have the great Jeff "El Jefe" Anderson sit in and share his illustrious talents. Mr. Anderson is a well-known South Texas legend.

With an aggressive work ethic and hankering to earn beer money, the team crafted a set list worthy of any juke joint and began their quest to conquer South Texas.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Tony Legner

Tony Legner
Guitar and Vocals

Tony's love of music began at an early age. With a father who was a professional musician leading and performing in numerous bands-including his own. Music was a constant presence in the Legner household. Regular rehearsals with a twelve-piece ensemble in the family basement further fueled Tony's musical curiosity. Inspired by this vibrant environment, Tony took piano and guitar lessons before landing his first gig in his cousin's rock cover band, a role he held for three years throughout early high school.

While attending college, Tony pursued a career in the culinary arts, working his way through various restaurants and refining his skills. This dedication led to a successful 50-year career as a professional chef.

Although still active in the culinary world, Tony has recently embraced a slower pace, allowing him to rekindle his childhood passion for music. This time with a focus on the guitar. A chance meeting on the golf course with Chris Hilbrich, a drummer extraordinaire, led to the formation of the original Bluestown band, marking an exciting new chapter in Tony's lifelong musical journey.

Matt Johnston

Matt Johnston
Bass and Vocals

Matt's love for music, of all genres, goes back as far as he can remember. By the age of 13 he saved enough money to buy his first bass guitar. In high school, he played in a number of rock bands. Eventually, he co-founded the band Warpath and began playing clubs and events. That band morphed into the metal band known as Empty.

In the early 90's he was certified as an Audio Engineer by the Audio Engineering Institute. Running sound at live music events and working with the San Antonio cover band, The Max, he learned a lot about the art of live music and recording.

The band days faded in the late 90's giving way to his career in the computer/IT field. Always fascinated with electronics and recording he built a home studio where he has been recording over the years.

A fortuitous chain of events introduced Matt to Tony Legner. Shortly after meeting, Bluestown found themselves looking for a bass player. The rest is history. His audio recording studio, The Cave, is seeing a lot of action these days.

Matt Hesley

A veteran player with long experience, Matt first began jamming on harmonica with high-school friends in the mid 1970's. He recalls that "At one point there were five of us, all playing harp together around the neighborhoods and our school." Matt is a California native and transplanted Texan, and has worked with gospel, blues and country bands in North Texas, the Hill Country and the Coastal Bend. His retro playing style is influenced by Little Walter Jacobs, Big Walter Horton, Roly Platt and Paul Butterfield among others.

Vocals and other noise makers

Being a singer in a Blues Band was never on his radar… He grew up in a very musical family in Pittsburgh, PA… So a love for music was embedded in his soul… But Rich never pursued a musical career, he just enjoyed it… He was a total jock from birth, playing all sports throughout his life… He moved to Houston in 1981 where he landed a job in the electrical field as a Utility Lineman… After 42 years as a lineman, he retired, moved to Rockport and golfs everyday.. Through golf, he developed a friendship with Chris and Tony and started to follow the original Bluestown Band.

His desire to be a sports announcer, his love to dabble in Karaoke and the daily theatrical singing in the shower was his path to Bluestown.
